From the Principal
It was so exciting to see the commencement of the 2026 school year take place. Our teaching staff were ready and raring to go, and our students were also excited to begin their formal educational journey after the long summer break.
With a record enrolment of students, Hills is well placed to continue our growth as we continue to implement our Strategic Plan 2025-2029.
Our exciting T block renovation has provided some wonderful new classroom learning environments. We have invested heavily in new furniture and Ben Q interactive boards for these new learning spaces, so that the rooms really look and feel like a special new place to learn in for our upper primary students.
The STEAM Centre is in the final phases of construction and barring some horrendous weather we should be able to take possession in mid-March. The building is looking spectacular and is really becoming a centrepiece as the project draws to conclusion.
Our students have made a pleasing start, and the opening of a school year provides staff, students and parents with the opportunity to build strong routines for learning that can carry throughout the year. Building these routines takes work as does the transition to any critical juncture of schooling. For example, Prep, Year 3, Year 7 and Year 11 are all critical juncture points for students.
Immunocompromised Student
I have previously written to the community regarding an immunocompromised student in Year 3 this year. The greatest gift that we can give young Luka is our care and support by ensuring that we do not send our children to school if they are unwell. Your love and care will assist Luka to stay well and to return to his school education after a huge year fighting cancer. Please show your care for Luka by working with us on this request.
New Staff
I would like to welcome all of our new staff including Ms Arife Arif who replaces Mrs Kendall MacMillan as a teacher aide. Kendall served the College for over 10 years, and we wish her well in her new role.
Mrs Angie Hall is moving to a new challenge, and we wish her all the best for her next role and thank her for her contribution to Hills. Ms Amy West-Sadler is an extremely experienced and competent inclusive education teacher who will continue Mrs Hall's good work.
Leaders' Investiture Ceremony
On Friday we held our Leaders' Investiture Ceremony in the HPE Centre. It was an exciting moment in the journey of all of our student leaders as they were presented with their badges in front of the whole student body. Congratulations to each of our student leaders for 2026 and we look forward to seeing each of you bring your own leadership style and talents to your positions.

NAPLAN 2026
Test window
The NAPLAN test window is 9 days, from Wednesday 11 March to Monday 23 March 2026.
NAPLAN tests need to be taken in a specific order: writing, reading, conventions of language and then numeracy.
NAPLAN General Information
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be sitting NAPLAN between 11 and 23 March 2026. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. However, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
Why NAPLAN is conducted online?
• NAPLAN transitioned from a paper-based to an online assessment from 2018 to 2022, with the exception of the Year 3 writing test.
• NAPLAN online provides a better assessment and more precise results.
• One of the main benefits of NAPLAN online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means students receive questions better suited to their abilities, so they can show what they know and can do.
• Online testing allows ACARA to provide a wide range of accessibility options to support students with disability to access NAPLAN.
• Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.
Why do NAPLAN?
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation
for other learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
• NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. NAPLAN does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. A child’s teacher will have the best insight into the child’s educational progress. NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
• NAPLAN questions are aligned with the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. As such, the best preparation students can do for NAPLAN is their everyday classroom learning. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
• The assessments allow parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy, and over time. Along with other school assessment reports, NAPLAN supports parents/carers in discussing their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with teachers.
• NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
• NAPLAN can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against the national measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
• Students and parents/carers wishing to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN can visit the public demonstration site.
Key features of a tailored test
• NAPLAN is an online tailored (or adaptive) test.
• This means students receive questions better suited to their abilities, so they can show what they know and can do.
• Trials of the tailored test design also show students are more engaged with tests that adapt to their test performance.
• Students should not be concerned if they think the questions are more difficult than they expected or they have previously experienced –this may simply mean they are taking a more challenging but more appropriate pathway.
• Tailored testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be tested than in paper tests, where all students answer the same questions.
NAPLAN is for everyone: help for students with disability sitting NAPLAN
NAPLAN is for everyone. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is committed to an inclusive testing process that allows all students to participate in the National Assessment Program.
Adjustments are provided to students with disability to enable an equivalent learner experience during NAPLAN testing and include, for example, magnification, alternative questions, keyboard accessibility, extra time and rest breaks.
Schools will consult parents, carers and students to jointly identify reasonable adjustments required for individual students with disability to access NAPLAN, in keeping with the NAPLAN national protocols for test administration.
College Yearbook
The College Yearbook for 2025 has been published and is in the process of being distributed to students. The yearbook provides a definitive chronicle of the year that was. Producing a yearbook is an enormous team effort with many moving parts that need to be coordinated. I would like to thank Ms Jodie Gilliam for her work in coordinating and editing our yearbook. I would also like to thank all those staff, students and parents who contributed articles to the yearbook.
