During the September school holidays, a group of Hills International College students embarked on an unforgettable educational and cultural journey to Japan, strengthening international friendships and immersing themselves in the rich traditions and vibrant life of one of the world's most fascinating countries.

Experiencing High School, Japan Style

A highlight of the trip was spending time with our sister schools, Seibudai Chiba High School, Kansai International Academy, and Setouchi High School, where students experienced authentic Japanese school life while building connections with their Japanese peers.

The exchange provided a unique opportunity for students to engage in cross-cultural learning. Hills students and their Seibudai buddies participated in a special calligraphy lesson, exploring the artistry, precision and history behind this traditional Japanese practice. In return, our students prepared and delivered a lesson for Seibudai Year 9 students, sharing insights into Australian culture, lifestyle and education.

Discovering Tokyo

The group spent time exploring some of Tokyo's most iconic landmarks and attractions. Students stepped back in time at the Samurai and Ninja Museum, as well as visiting:

  • Meiji Jingu Shrine
  • The famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing
  • Kaminarimon Gate
  • Sensoji Temple
  • Tokyo Skytree

These experiences provided students with insight into Japan's unique blend of ancient traditions and modern innovation.

Reflecting in Hiroshima

A visit to Hiroshima offered a powerful opportunity for learning and reflection. Students visited the Peace Park in Hiroshima and were able to see the Hiroshima Dome, one of the surviving structures of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima. The group also had the privilege of hearing from a survivor of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima.

While in Hiroshima, the group also participated in a traditional maple leaf confectionery class. Students learned how to make small hotcakes filled with chocolate or sweet bean paste, creating one of the region's most popular sweet treats and enjoying a hands-on taste of local culture.

Adventure and Fun at Universal Studios Japan

Students were able to unwind and have fun during a day out at Universal Studios Japan.

Building Global Perspectives

Through cultural immersion, homestay experiences, shared learning and meaningful connections with our sister school community, students returned home with a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture and a broader understanding of the world around them.

We thank our sister schools for their warm hospitality and friendship and look forward to continuing this valued international partnership for many years to come.
