ASX Competition Hills 2021

Hills’ Economics students were entered by their teacher Mr Jarrah Newton in the ASX Sharemarket Game Schools 2021, and we are delighted to announce that one of our syndicates has won the first runner-up prize in the state rankings for Queensland, and first runner-up prize in the national rankings. Students have been awarded a $500 cash prize. The students were competing against 23,228 other syndicates, nationwide, and have placed above high-achieving state and private schools.

The competition teaches the students about investing and the share market, and they can put into practice what they are learning in Economics and Business by playing the Sharemarket Game. Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10-week period, in over 200 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market, so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get.

As a result of playing the Game students:

  • Develop their knowledge of the share market
  • Learn how to research companies
  • Discover the importance of wise investment decisions
  • Gain a greater knowledge of economic and world events
  • Begin to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future

The students, Jacob Alkin, Maisie Doan and Amadeus Susanto, are absolutely thrilled to have placed so well and are excited that the knowledge and skills they have gained in Economics lessons have had a real practical application. The students are now confident in pursuing careers in economics, marketing, business and finance through their university, and other pathways offered as a result of their attendance at Hills College.

The competition runs twice a year and we will be sure to enter the next round.
