 Stephanie Dieckmann

In January of 2011 I was fortunate enough to spend time living and working overseas and after coming back to Australia I had caught ‘the bug’. I couldn't wait to travel; I wanted to see the world and explore. I really wanted to become enriched by the culture of a different country and really live like a local. Asia has always fascinated me and when I returned to Australia I started seeking opportunities to live and work in China. I was lucky enough to be accepted into the Hills Educational Foundation Kindy project in Taiyuan, China, where I have just spent the last 12 months living and working.

Taiyuan is an interesting city:  quite small by Chinese standards, and completely massive by Australian standards. It's 3 hours by high speed train northwest of Beijing, and, although it is a city that is constantly growing and developing, it is also full of history and culture.

Although the foreign community was quite small when I first arrived, it has been constantly growing. It doesn’t matter if you’re into food, sport, art, or studying Chinese you can really become involved in the culture, and I think that is really unique to a city such as Taiyuan.

The people of Taiyuan are always welcoming and friendly; we get together to play sport, whether it be soccer or badminton, or go for coffee or drinks, and we are forever taking trips to surrounding mountains and temples and really exploring China. The food is amazing. Our city is famous for its noodles, but by no means do we eat rice or noodles every day.  The food is spicy or mild, whether pork, chicken or beef - and so much choice of fruits and vegetables.

My job is five days a week and has really become quite regular. I wake to a beautiful sunrise over the river that my apartment looks over and eat a very 'normal' breakfast of toast or fruit or cereal and begin at school at 8am through until early midday. What is really funny about Taiyuan is that at midday the entire city closes down and has a rest period until 2 or 3pm in the afternoon. After that I go back to school and have my class until 6pm. Yes, the days can be long, but it is so worthwhile and so rewarding.

Hills Kindy has given me this wonderful life of living and working overseas. Travelling and really living somewhere completely different, I am so fortunate to have had this opportunity and can’t wait to go back for another 12 months.
