Hills students become World Junior Golf Champions in Jakarta

Hills College and Golf Academy sent 14 students to compete in the Himbara World Junior Golf Championship which was held in Jakarta last week. Playing on the Robert Trent Jones designed Damai Indah Golf Course, 145 junior golfers from 20 different countries came together to contest the Championship.

Hills students Zubair Firdaus and Hannah Reeves played brilliantly to win their respective tournaments. Zubair (who is a Malaysian and studying at Hills for the past 3 years) won the Boys Junior Championship with rounds of 69, 75, 75 71 for a total of 290. He had won the 14 years and under event last year but this year he was now competing in the under 18 year category which was quite a big step up. He beat Andre Chong from Singapore and Australian mate, Sam Slater (current Qld Schoolboy Champion) by a comfortable 7 shots who were tied 2nd.

Hannah Reeves also won the under 18 girls championship closing with a magnificent birdie on the last hole to break the deadlock between her and Thailand’s # 1 junior, Jenny Ham. Hannah had rounds of 71, 69, 75 for a total of 215.

Hills has had a couple of junior world champions previously. In 2004, world renowned golfer, Jason Day won the championship in 2004 in his final year at Hills. Jason was the vice-captain of the College in that year. In 2010, Jovi Pangabbean from Indonesia, won whilst attending Hills College in his senior year. This year is special because we have two world champions at the one time.

When Jason won his world junior, the College welcomed him back through a guard of honour by the Hills golfing students. He walked through an arch of golf clubs and the photo has been synonymous with his relationship at Hills. The Golf Academy is planning of honouring their latest champions with a similar guard of honour at 2-00pm at the Hills Golf Academy this Wednesday (13thJune).

All media are invited to witness this event and attend a press conference immediately following to be held inside the Academy.
